Search Rankings

Definition

Search Rankings are the positions where webpages appear in search engine results for a particular search query. Higher rankings generally make a webpage more visible to people using search engines such as Google and Bing.

Why It Matters

Search Rankings remain important for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but AI Search typically generates answers instead of presenting ranked lists of webpages, so improving AI Visibility requires a different approach.

Simple Example

A roofing company ranks first in Google for "roof repair Sacramento." When someone asks an AI system, "Who repairs leaking roofs in Sacramento?", the AI generates an answer instead of displaying a ranked list of websites. A high Google ranking alone does not guarantee the business will be named in that answer.
