Write glossary terms that AI systems can select, reuse, and attribute

Most definitions fail silently because they are unclear, inconsistent, or incomplete. These examples show exactly what works and what fails so you can write definitions that are used and named in AI generated answers.

What you will learn

How to define one concept in one sentence

How to write definitions that stand alone and can be extracted

How to avoid common failures that prevent AI selection

How to keep wording consistent across your entire site

How to use this page

Success definition : Your glossary is correct when each term is clear, complete, consistent, and reusable without rewriting

Review one example set at a time

Compare the correct and incorrect definitions

Apply the same pattern to your glossary terms

Rewrite any definition that breaks a rule

Example Set 1: One concept per definition

Rule Illustration: One Concept per Definition

Term: Authority Level AI Visibility

Correct : Authority level AI visibility is the condition where an AI system uses a brand’s content in a generated answer and explicitly names the brand as a source.

Incorrect : Authority level AI visibility is when a brand is named, trusted, and ranked highly across AI systems.

Focus : The definition must explain one concept only.

Failure mode : The definition combines multiple ideas into one sentence.

What changed

The correct version defines one condition, naming in AI answers. The incorrect version combines naming, trust, and ranking. This breaks the rule: One concept per definition.

Why this matters

AI systems select definitions that explain one clear idea. Combining multiple ideas reduces clarity and reuse.

Example Set 2: Consistency across site

Rule Illustration: Consistency Across Site

Term: Cost Per Click

Correct : Cost per click is a digital advertising pricing model where an advertiser pays a fee each time a user clicks a specific online advertisement.

Incorrect :

Home Page : Cost per click is a digital advertising pricing model where an advertiser pays a fee each time a user clicks a specific online advertisement.

Products Page : Cost per click is a pricing method used in online advertising where advertisers pay per click.

About Page : Cost per click is a metric that shows how much advertisers spend for each click.

Focus : The same definition must be repeated exactly across pages.

Failure mode : The wording or meaning changes across the site.

What changed

The correct version uses identical wording across all pages. The incorrect versions introduce wording variation and shift the meaning from pricing model to pricing method and then to metric. This breaks the rule: Consistency across site.

Why this matters

AI systems look for repeated language patterns across a site. Consistent wording reinforces one clear signal. Variations split the signal and reduce recognition and reuse.

Example Set 3: First sentence rule

Rule Illustration: First Sentence Rule

Term: Rhinoplasty

Correct : Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the structure of the nose to improve nasal appearance, nasal function, or both.

Incorrect : Rhinoplasty can improve both appearance and breathing. It is a common procedure used for cosmetic and functional reasons.

Focus : The definition must appear in the first sentence.

Failure mode : The definition is delayed or replaced with explanation.

What changed

The correct version defines the procedure in the first sentence. The incorrect version starts with outcomes and delays the definition, which never clearly appears. This breaks the rule: First sentence rule.

Why this matters

AI systems extract the first clear definition they encounter. If the definition is not in the first sentence, it is less likely to be selected or reused.

Example Set 4: Completeness

Rule Illustration: Completeness

Term: Power of Attorney

Correct : A power of attorney is a legal document that gives one person authority to act on behalf of another person in specified legal, financial, or medical matters.

Incorrect : A power of attorney is a document that allows someone to act for another person.

Focus : The definition must fully resolve the meaning in one sentence.

Failure mode : The definition is partial or missing key detail.

What changed

The correct version defines scope and structure. The incorrect version omits key detail about scope and conditions. This breaks the rule: Completeness.

Why this matters

Incomplete definitions require interpretation. AI systems prefer fully resolved meaning.

Example Set 5: Avoid marketing and promotional language

Rule Illustration: Avoid Marketing and Promotional Language

Term: Trademark

Correct : A trademark is a legally registered word, phrase, symbol, or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of goods or services from those of others.

Incorrect : A trademark is a powerful, industry leading solution that protects your brand and drives recognition in the marketplace.

Focus : The definition must use precise, concrete language that clearly defines the concept.

Failure mode : The definition uses marketing or promotional wording instead of defining the concept.

What changed

The correct version defines the concept using specific, verifiable language. The incorrect version replaces the definition with marketing and promotional language. This breaks the rule: Avoid marketing and promotional language.

Why this matters

AI systems select content they can interpret and verify. Marketing and promotional language does not define meaning and is less likely to be selected or reused.

Example Set 6: Avoid circular definitions

Rule Illustration: Avoid Circular Definitions

Term: Dental Crown

Correct : A dental crown is a fixed prosthetic restoration that fully covers a damaged, weakened, or treated tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function.

Incorrect : A dental crown is a type of dental crown used to restore teeth.

Focus : The definition must add meaning and not repeat the term.

Failure mode : The term is restated instead of explained.

What changed

The correct version explains what the concept is and how it functions. The incorrect version repeats the term without adding meaning. This breaks the rule: Avoid circular definitions.

Why this matters

Circular definitions add no value. AI systems skip definitions that do not clarify meaning.

Example Set 7: Standalone usability

Rule Illustration: Standalone Usability

Term: Root Canal

Correct : A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the root canals, and preserves the remaining tooth structure.

Incorrect : This procedure removes infection and saves the tooth. A treatment used when the inner part of the tooth becomes infected.

Focus : The definition must make sense on its own without relying on surrounding context.

Failure mode : The definition depends on references, pronouns, or missing context.

What changed

The correct version names the procedure and fully explains it. The first incorrect version uses a reference and does not define the term. The second incorrect version omits the term and relies on implied context. This breaks the rule: Standalone usability.

Why this matters

AI systems extract single sentences and use them as complete answers. If a sentence depends on context, it cannot be reliably selected or reused.

Example Set 8: Overlapping concepts

Rule Illustration: Overlapping Concepts

Term: Authority Level AI Visibility

Correct : Authority level AI visibility is the condition where an AI system uses a brand’s content in a generated answer and explicitly names the brand as a source.

Incorrect : Authority level AI visibility is when a brand is visible in AI systems, quoted in answers, and ranked highly across platforms. Authority level AI visibility is when a brand is selected and recognized as a trusted source in AI generated answers.

Focus : Each term must represent one distinct concept.

Failure mode : Multiple related ideas are merged into one definition.

What changed

The correct version defines one specific concept. The first incorrect version merges visibility, quoting, and ranking. The second incorrect version subtly blends naming with trust. This breaks the rule: Overlapping concepts.

Why this matters

AI systems select definitions with clear, distinct meaning. When concepts are merged, precision drops and selection and attribution decrease.

Example Set 9: Mechanism clarity

Rule Illustration: Mechanism Clarity

Term: Cost Per Click

Correct : Cost per click is a digital advertising pricing model where an advertiser pays a fee each time a user clicks an advertisement, which triggers the charge.

Incorrect : Cost per click is a pricing model used in online advertising. Cost per click is a way advertisers pay for clicks to drive traffic.

Focus : Focus : The definition must explain the trigger or process that makes the concept function.

Failure mode : The definition names the concept or outcome but does not explain how it works.

What changed

The correct version explains the trigger, which is the click that causes the charge. The first incorrect version removes the trigger. The second incorrect version describes the outcome without the process. This breaks the rule: Mechanism clarity.

Why this matters

AI systems prioritize definitions that show cause and process. If the mechanism is missing, reuse and selection decrease.
